David Cherry - Mercy Ships

David Cherry was in his late 30’s, when he committed his life to God. Within 15 months he had become a ‘Charter Member’ of Crossroads Fellowship Church, here in Raleigh NC, and began to feel called into full time Christian service. So, in 1989, at the age of 40, David left Raleigh to begin training and a 12-year commitment to ‘Youth With A Mission (YWAM). His training and subsequent mission were primarily centered in Texas. While with YWAM, David attended Bible School, then taught at a Christian School, which prepared teachers to begin Bible Training Schools around the world.

In 2001, David answered God’s call to begin work with Mercy Ships, which was one of YWAM’s family of Christian ministries. David Writes, “This wonderful organization uses hospital ships to bring hope and healing, both physically and spiritually, to many of Africa’s forgotten poor. In many cases we were the only hope.” David continues, “I lived eight fantastic years on our hospital ships in Africa. The memories of so many wonderful people from ten different African nations will last a lifetime.”

In 2014, David returned from Africa, to his present station at the Mercy Ships global headquarters in Tyler Texas. David is still delighted to be serving the Kingdom of God through Mercy Ships today. He now focuses on ‘Safety Systems’ (procedures, equipment, training and certifications) for the floating hospitals. He writes, “Our newest 550 crew hospital ship is under construction and we are looking forward to its future addition in Africa. Personally, I am excited about where the Lord has me, and I look forward to many more years of watching the Lord touch the poorest of the poor through Mercy Ships.”
